Farewell To A Friend

This week my good friend Bryan James left Epiphany and will be shortly moving to Amsterdam to join those talented folks at Resn.

I’ve worked with Bryan for the past 3 years and he’s one of the most talented and passionate digital designers I’ve ever met. If you don’t know him already, then please take this opportunity to look through some of his amazing work, you won’t be disappointed.

Kick Your Habits

What I like about all these projects is that I watched them develop from initial idea to the polished final project you’re seeing now. There were battles along the way, problems that needed solving but you wouldn’t know it. Bryan is meticulous in his approach and he never settles for anything that doesn’t meet his own personal standard and you can clearly see that in his work.

The good thing about working alongside someone like Bryan is that it definitely improves you as a designer. There’s a talk that designer Nick Campbell gives called Doing Your Best Work and one of the most memorable quotes from that talk is…

Don’t be the best one in the room. Go be somewhere where you can learn from other people.

Essentially if you surround yourself with great designers then it can’t help but improve you. I think it’s a really good lesson to learn, particularly if you’re a younger designer. It still applies to me though, even at the ripe old age of 35 I’m still learning from the people around me every day.

Farewell to Bryan and good luck in Amsterdam!

Nice post on a great guy, I had the pleasure of studying with Bryan and he was like my little brother except a lot more talented, a true designer, he would always worry even though his work was twice as much as everyone else’s. Everyone knew he would go far and I am proud of how far he has come from a shy, particularly ‘green’ (Bryan will know what I mean) young man.
