The Deadline Is Your Friend

November 28, 2008

This industry runs in fear of deadlines. Designers cower when the word is spoken and developers - well, ‘it takes as long as it takes’ is the standard response.

Just lately, as I approach probably the busiest I’ve ever been in my career I’ve learned to embrace the deadline and it’s become one of my biggest allies. (more…)

Texture in Web Design

November 23, 2008

I’m not entirely sure why I wanted to write about texture in web design this week, but for some reason it seemed appropriate - maybe it’s because I associate autumn with texture more than any other season, or maybe it’s just because I’ve been seeing a lot of it as I’ve searched the net lately (probably).

Anyway, here is a round up of 5 sites that I’ve stumbled upon lately that I think for one reason or another really make the best of texture. (more…)

Breaking in to Web Design

October 13, 2008

I often get emailed with the question “How do I get in to the web design industry?”, mostly from students but occasionally people who just want a change of career. My answer is almost always the same regardless of whether you’re a student or not and I’m going to cover some of that advice below.

30 Days Without Google

September 26, 2008

After making a child-like error while developing my freelance portfolio site, I now have to survive without a Google listing for around the next 30 days.

Enquiries from Google usually generate around 50% of my workload so it’s going to be an interesting period and one that can’t pass quickly enough for me.
