Web Design Elements PSD

September 1, 2010

I recently created a PSD containing some of the elements that are common to a lot of the designs that I work on to speed up my design process. Too often I was screen grabbing things like radio buttons, checkboxes, dropdowns or having to visit lipsum.com for a couple of paragraphs of lorem ipsum. So far it’s been really handy so I thought I’d post it for others to download and use as they see fit. If you have any requests of things that I could/should include on it, or indeed want to make any additions to it yourself I’d love to hear/see them.

Web Design Elements

All the elements are on a transparent background so you should be able to drag and drop them straight onto your own designs.

Fixed Price Web Quotes

August 23, 2010

Most freelancers start out with an idea of how much they’d like to charge as an hourly rate, some work out how many hours they’re likely to work and divide this by the salary they’d like to earn to get this figure, others just choose a value that they feel reflects their talents. Neither way is right or wrong and over the course of your freelance career this figure will change as your level of experience grows. But what do you do when a client wants a fixed price quote? Perch, A Brilliant Little CMS

August 11, 2010

PerchAs a web designer, I’m often asked to build websites with some form of content management system, but there’s a slight problem – I’m not a coder, I’m very much a designer. Solutions to this problem such as Wordpress are great, they allow designers to create content management systems without the headache of creating the back end. There are plenty of options out there too Joomla, Drupal, Expression Engine and TextPattern to name but a few. (more…)

Adobe’s Insane Pricing

June 14, 2010

Adobe CS5 Master CollectionSo you want to buy Adobe’s CS5 Master Collection do you? Well if you’re American that’ll set you back a cool $2,599USD which isn’t a bad price considering the amount of software in the bundle. Adobe really do have the market cornered, there are plenty of options when it comes to coding, but if you’re looking to design – you really will need at least one of the following Illustrator, Photoshop, Fireworks and/or InDesign.

Should you want to pick up a copy of CS5 Master Collection in the UK then you can expect to pay £2,706.02GBP. Now I know that the pound isn’t particularly strong against the dollar at the moment but I have to say that is completely ridiculous. A quick conversion (using Google’s current exchange rate) of the US price to pounds comes out at £1767.32, which means that UK customers are paying almost £1,000 more than customers in the US. Am I the only one that finds this a little bit unfair?
